Frosty 5k

The McGuirk family did the Frosty 5k run on Saturday. This is a smile 3.1 mile race in Fort Walton Beach. Bode was excited to see he had a number of friends from the swim team that would also be running; unfortunately, these friends also run cross country, so Bode had some stiff competition. Below is a good shot of them before the race.

The two boys on the right are Zach and Matias. Matias ended up winning the whole race, while Zach came in third. Here is a post-race picture.
Bode ran well--finished is 24:06, which is about twenty seconds faster than his first 5k; sadly, he got a very bad blister on his foot. Ashley and I both managed to win our age groups (like I said, it was a very small race); there is no need to post our times :-) I did take a couple selfies of the three of us, but the Big Stinker would not cooperate.
I then tried to get a picture of Bode and Ashley but neither one of them seemed excited about a photo.
Bode eventually abandoned us for his friends, typical of a teenager. I snuck a picture of the three of them chilling on the wall.

It is a dreary day here in FWB. Temps are in the 50's, but it is cloudy and feels like a cold fall day in Ohio. I'm sure we'll watch some football, and I'll probably do some grocery shopping; supplies are low in the house, and Bode is hungry :-) Pleasant week to all.

Weekend at Aubies

Bode had a big swim meet this past weekend. Ashley and Bode drove up Friday around lunch time. Bode swam seven (7!) events at the meet. Unfortunately, Bode is now in the "15 and Over" group, so he swam against people ages 15 - 20, so winning was not really a possibility. Bode was swimming against the clock, and he knocked out some PRs!

The Auburn facility is pretty nice, but the pool gets very crowded during warmups; I don't even know where Bode is in this picture.

His first event was the 500-free. Here he is getting ready.
Here he is mid-swim.
Bode's best time coming into the meet was a 5:35; he shaved sixteen seconds off that time and finished in 5:19. The 500-free was the only event Friday night. Ashley and Bode headed out to dinner and then back to the hotel for a good night's rest. They were back at the pool by 9:00 am Saturday morning.
His first event was the 200-free. Best time coming in was 2:02. In the video, Bode is the 4th swimmer from the top (he has a white cap on).
He crushed it with a time of 1:58.95, although we gave him a hard time because a kid named Booby beat him.
Bode also swam the 50-free on Saturday, doing a PR of 24.89, and he also swam the 100-fly; he swam in 58.11, which wasn't a PR, but still a very good swim considering it was his fourth race in less than 16 hours.

Saturday night, Mississippi State was playing Auburn in basketball, so Ashley shelled out a small fortune and scored some tickets for herself and the little man.

The games are rather festive and raucous. Fortunately Auburn pulled off a big win, although by the look on Bode's face, I think he would just rather be taking a nap :-)
Bode had three more events on Sunday. He swam the 200 individual medley, and he wasn't thrilled with his time. He said his breast stroke just wasn't working. He redeemed himself by swimming a PR in both the 100-free (54 seconds) and the 100-back (1:00--took six seconds off his time!)
Bode and Ashley returned on Sunday afternoon, and the dogs were thrilled to see them (as was I :-)

Bode rested and relaxed on MLK day; I played some pickleball, while Ashley had to earn money to cover the cost of those tickets :-) Pleasant week to all.

The Rather Mild Plung

Per the tradition that has spanned back to the beginning of time, the McGuirk's (well, two of them) participated in the New Year's Day Polar Plunge. The temperature was a balmy 72, so it's not like we were braving the elements or risking life and limb. Before jumping in, Bode and I posed for a picture or two.

As much as we tried to convince her, Ashley refused to jump in with us. I guess it's only the men that uphold this tradition. Without further adieu, Bode and I leapt (eased) into the water.
Despite the warm air, the water was still quite cold. Ashley managed to get a nice picture of me making my way to land. Note how Rowdy is waiting for me.

Happy 2023 to all!
